Visit our Top 10 Scottish Film Locations by Motorhome

Scotland’s stunning landscapes are a wonderful backdrop for many films and TV Shows. Why not theme your motorhome tour of Scotland around some of the best locations featured on the big screen or your favourite TV series? Here we have compiled a list of various locations well worth a visit on your motorhome holiday.

1. Glencoe

The road through Glencoe is so wonderful in its own right that you simply have to include it in your driving tour. It’s no wonder with such stunning scenery that it has appeared in lots of films, including that famous shot in James Bond’s Skyfall and the Outlander series as well as in several of the Harry Potter movies. It’s been in a Bollywood movie, too: Kyun! Ho Gaya Na was partly filmed here.

2. Doune Castle

Located near Stirling, Doune Castle is Castle Leoch, home to Colum MacKenzie, in Season 1 of Outlander. It also features as The Castle of Guy De Lombard in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. If you do pay a visit try out the audio tour of the castle narrated by Monty Python’s Terry Jones.

3. Calton Hill, Edinburgh

Motorhome Escapes is located near Edinburgh, so it’s not surprising we’d recommend Scotland’s capital city as well worth a visit in its own right. So many films – from Trainspotting to Cloud Atlas and Starting Over – have used locations in Edinburgh that it’s hard to pick one spot, but you get terrific views across the city from the top of Calton Hill.

4. Rosslyn Chapel

Famous for its appearance in the Da Vinci Code, the beautifully Gothic Rosslyn Chapel is fantastically carved – and it’s said to be haunted, too. The chapel is located in the village of Roslin and is easy to get to from Edinburgh. To get the most out of your visit and soak up the history of the chapel, take advantage of the guided tours that run throughout the day (included in the admission price).

5. Duns Castle

Further west of Edinburgh is Duns, near Coldstream. Duns Castle stands in for both Balmoral and Windsor castles in Mrs Brown, and the stables at Manderston for Windsor Castle stables. Both properties also featured in Shades of Love, and Manderston was a location for House of Mirth and The Awakening, too.

6. St Andrews

The West Sands and the Old Course Hotel at St. Andrews both appeared in Chariots of Fire. St Andrews is also famous for golf, the ruined castle and Cathedral, and Scotland’s oldest University, where the students wear red gowns. The town also has many fine independent shops and eateries, and is a great place to spend a day or two, and the nearby Fife fishing villages are also well worth a visit. The local area is well set up for visiting motorhomes and there are many good campsites to choose from: http://www.visitstandrews.com/stay/caravan-camping-parks/

7. Pennan

This small fishing village on the coast of the Moray Firth was one half of the village in Local Hero. The iconic telephone box is now protected. The “local” beach is on the other side of the country, at Morar! Pennan beach does appear in the recent remake of Whisky Galore, though, while nearby Portsoy stands in for the village of Todday in the same film.

8. Glenfinnan Viaduct.

On the way to Morar you pass probably the most famous railway view in Scotland: the Glenfinnan Viaduct over which the Hogwarts Express thunders in the Harry Potter films. You can take a ride on the train yourself – it runs from Fort William to Mallaig. The countryside round here also featured in Braveheart and Rob Roy. The viaduct is extremely close to the Glenfinnan monument, where there is plenty of parking and a visitor centre run by the National Trust.

9. Drummond Castle Gardens, Crieff

The town of Crieff is a traditional market town in Perthshire, the heart of Scotland. Just outside the town lies Drummond Castle, which boasts one of Scotland’s most impressive formal gardens. These gardens have featured in Outlander, Rob Roy and numerous TV programmes and advertisements. Laid out in formal parterres, the design dates from the 17th century and has a rich history. You can visit the gardens between April and October to find out more.

10. The Quirang, Skye

The Isle of Skye is a very popular spot at the moment, and can get very busy during the Summer months. If Skye is one of your ‘must-do’ locations (and it is deservedly on many people’s list!), then we would recommend trying to fit your visit out of peak season if possible. The incredible mountain landscape has featured in multiple movies, from The Land that Time Forgot, through Stardust and Macbeth to The BFG. Also on Skye, the Old Man of Storr appeared in The Wickerman and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and the Cuillin range was a location in Highlander.

That’s our round up of great film locations in Scotland, but there are so many wonderful places in Scotland to visit. The Visit Scotland website has some great ideas if you’re a big film buff, with detailed itineraries on how to plan your motorhome tour. Or, if you’re thinking of hiring a motorhome, just get in touch and we’d be more than happy to help you plan your holiday. Happy touring!
