Motorhome Easter Holiday Ideas for April

Easter is a very popular time for holidays in the UK because it usually signals a 2 week term break for schools, colleges and universities. And with a large chunk of the population free of responsibilities for a while, the local holiday spots start filling up fast! The actual date for Easter  can vary each year by as much as 2 weeks (as it did between 2017 and 2018), so make sure to google the date for Easter in the UK first before you go any further with your holiday planning.

Up in Scotland, the weather will be settling into the bright and sunny days of Spring, and the days will be getting longer. This makes Easter the absolute best time to gather the family together in one of our modern motorhomes, and explore Scotland for yourself! Our country is so varied from east to west that you could really make a motorhome holiday your own, whether that means a quiet retreat in the rugged highlands, wild camping at night and sleeping under the stars… A trip around the major cities and towns of Scotland to get a real taste of the local food and culture… Or something else entirely.

But Easter is far and away the best time to visit Scotland because there’s just so much going on.

Our 6 berth motorhomes are equipped with two double beds and one bunk bed, so there’s room for the whole family; plus, we include a full entertainment system to ensure they’ll never get bored. Although with so much going on in April, there won’t be time to watch DVDs!

We’ve done the hard work for you below and listed the top things to see and do in Scotland over Easter, and when you pick up your motorhome, we can have them all programmed into the GPS navigation system for you; simple!

Easter Weekend at Scone Palace

April 1st

Scone Palace in Perth, Central Scotland, plays host to a range of activities for families at Easter

Easter Weekend at Scone Palace in Perth, Central Scotland, is a family affair, with lots of games and activites organised for younger children, all set in the beautiful Scone Palace. Take part in a modern Easter tradition; an easter bunny hunt within the palace itself, in the Palace State rooms. Your little treasure-hunters will have fun searching out the bunnies that have been hidden throughout the rooms and there are prizes for those who spot them all. Amidst the Easter festivities, you can take your time to explore and take in the beauty of the Palace, and even roll your own painted egg down the famous Moot Hill.

In previous years, the Easter bunny has made an afternoon appearance, so get ready to impress him by getting your face painted and adorning yourself with some (temporary) glittery tattoos. There are usually outdoor games and pottery painting too, alongside food vendors like BBQ or a hog roast. Keep an eye on the Scone Palace Facebook page for the latest info.

Nearby Noah’s Ark Caravan Park, Newhouse Farm, Perth is the perfect location to set up camp with your motorhome for Scone Palace. The family-run site has great facilities including 50 electric pitches, 20 tent pitches, free wifi, and a heated toilet & shower block. Essential for any motorhome adventure, they also have a laundry room. And uniquely, this caravan park also boasts some entertainment facilities including the Noah’s Ark Childrens Playbarn, go-karting, bowling and golf driving range with crazy golf, alongside some beautiful walks, so you could enjoy yourselves here for a few days at least.

Edinburgh International Science Festival

31st March – 15th April 2018

Kids engaging with an interactive robot exhibit at the Edinburgh Science Festival

Head south from Perth along the M90 and into Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, for our next highlight! Right in time for the Easter break, get ready to celebrate the world of science and technology with more experiments and demonstrations than you can shake a stick at. The Edinburgh International Science Festival aims to inspire people of all ages to discover the world around them and is celebrating 30 years in 2018 with more going on than ever before. Events and activities take place over the course of two weeks throughout the city, so download the 2018 programme here for detailed info on where and when everything is taking place. There are workshops in the City Art Centre, interactive experiments at the National Museum of Scotland, ShowDome immersive cinema at Dynamic Earth, Pilot training school, and loads more.

Age, education and experience are irrelevant; you’re guaranteed to find heaps of things to do for everyone. You’ll probably end up having just as much fun as the kids, and learn something new too. It’s also a good break from all those Easter eggs you’ve eaten!

We usually recommend leaving your motorhome at a campsite on the outside of the city, as navigating the busy city streets can be tricky. There are a few park and rides available on the edge of Edinburgh to facilitate this. Mortonhall Caravan and Camping Park can be found on the southern edge of Edinburgh and has a range of facilities onsite, including public transport links. With so much going on during the day, it’ll be a relief to hop on a bus back to your scenic campsite and kick back in your cosy motorhome while the kids snooze away in their bunk beds.

Traquair’s Easter Eggstravaganza, Innerleithen

April 1st

South of Edinburgh in the Scottish borders, Traquair House hosts a similar Easter event to Scone Palace, so this could be an alternative option for you if the location is more convenient. Traquair’s Easter Extravaganza also takes place on April 1st, with the grounds open from 11am and activities going on from midday.

The family-run event boasts the biggest egg hunt in the Borders, with over 5,000 eggs hidden throughout the Traquair maze, and larger eggs given out as prizes. When you’re done treasure-hunting head to the beautiful walled gardens where there’s face-painting, Easter bonnet making, jugglers, crafts and more. The grand house and beautiful grounds (usually full to bursting with daffodils by this point) are worth visiting for the easter procession alone at 3pm.

There’s also the Traquair House Brewery on the grounds, enticing the adults amongst your party to sneak off and have a cheeky tour and tasting, unless you’re the one driving the motorhome that is! Or if you’re visiting later in the month, you could catch the monthly mass in Traquair’s chapel on April 26th.

Admission is £6 for adults, and £5 for children/concessions. Children under 5 go free. Traquair is not too far off the beaten track; it can be reached via a turn-off on the A72 through Innerleithen.

Head south west to the original Cocoabean at Twynholm in Dumfries and Galloway for some more chocolate delight. This family-run chocolate factory has 3 locations across the UK, creating handmade luxury chocolate and confectionary for some of the largest retailers in the UK (which you can buy online). And their workshop is like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, providing hours of chocolate-related fun. It includes both indoor and outdoor play areas for kids, a large cafe (that serves hearty food alongside sweet treats), and a chocolate workshop with viewing walls for you to see how it all gets made!

Cocoabean Events are hosted throughout the year, and are suitable for adults and children alike. Get involved in the whole process this Easter with the daily Chocolate Workshop Experience (which runs from 10am – 4pm daily), where you can make and decorate your own chocolates as a family, and devour them back in your motorhome!

Pre-booking is not required, so you can swing by any time.

Tradfest Edinburgh

Thurs 26 April – Sun 6 May

If your motorhome holiday stretches into the end of April, then we highly recommend a visit to Edinburgh for some of the energetic live music and dancing of Tradfest. Celebrating Scottish music, culture, art, storytelling, drama and more, 2018 marks the 5th showcase of this increasingly popular event, and especially for visitors to Scotland, this is a great opportunity to get in touch with the local culture.

Like the Edinburgh Science Festival at the start of the month, Tradfest takes place throughout the city at a variety of indoor and outdoor venues for a seriously immersive experience. You can expect walking tours of Edinburgh’s historic areas during the day, lively ceilidhs in the evening, workshops and talks, and unexpected pop-ups in random places. Explore Scottish folk cinema, and learn all about the local myths and legends in this thoroughly Scottish holiday. The hotels and airbnbs in the city can get pretty booked up during these two weeks, so you’ll be ahead of the curve with your motorhome already sorted.

This has just been a small taste of what’s going on in Scotland throughout Easter and April (dates correct as of 2018 but may change for subsequent years), and don’t forget the classic hills and munros of Scotland are available year round for explorers, along with a fantastic variety of water sports facilities up and down the coast. For more Easter holiday recommendations, or to find out how to hire a motorhome from Motorhome Escapes, just get in touch and we’d be more than happy to help you out.
