Hire a motorhome for skiing and snowboarding breaks in Scotland

The winter season is almost under way, and that means that Scotland’s ski resorts are once again getting ready to welcome visitors flocking to the slopes. If you fancy sampling all that Scotland’s five ski centres have to offer, a motorhome holiday might just be the ideal way!

Scotland’s ski resorts may not be as extensive as those in Europe or America, but they still offer great value and exceedingly fun day out! If you’re coming from the UK don’t have the hassle of passports, travel insurance or foreign currency, and the five ski centres are easily accessible by road (do check that the snow gates are open, which can be closed first thing in the morning).

Scotland’s ski centres

Each ski centre is slightly different and has its own character.

Glenshee Ski Centre is the largest ski centre in the UK, with 22 lifts and 36 runs in total. It has something for everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned pros. The ski centre is well equipped with cafe, ski hire shop and ski school, and Glenshee’s location makes it very popular.

CairnGorm is Scotland’s second biggest ski centre, located just a short distance from the A9 road running between Perth and Inverness. It boasts the UK’s highest restaurant and funicular railway, and with plenty of walks and outdoor activities available in the area, there’ll be something here to keep everyone entertained.

Located in the eastern Cairngorms, The Lecht is small, friendly and good for families. It has a magic carpet lift and smaller pistes lower down perfect for kids and beginners. The Lecht ski centre can be reached in about 75 minutes from Aberdeen or Inverness.

If you head west you can visit the popular Glencoe Mountain and Nevis Range resorts. The Nevis Range features the UK’s only mountain gondola, taking visitors from the car park up to over 2,000 feet. Glencoe is Scotland’s oldest ski centre, dating back to 1956. Glencoe offers skiing and snowboarding across 20 runs and 8, with the steepest black run in Britain.

Each resort has ski and snowboard hire available, so you don’t need to buy equipment if you just want to sample the snow. Each resort also offers ski lessons, with professional instructors to get you on your feet and down the slopes in no time! Car parking is usually free (though please do check before your trip) and the ski centres have shops, cafes, restaurants and toilet facilities. If you can, definitely go mid-week, when the slopes are much quieter and the queues far shorter!

Scottish ski breaks in a motorhome

Motorhome touring is one of the best ways to sample Scotland’s winter season and ski resorts. A Scottish skiing holiday in your motorhome is straightforward to organise, as all the major snow resorts are within easy reach of towns and major roads. With the freedom of a motorhome, you also don’t need to plan ahead with meals and accommodation, leaving you more time to stay on the slopes and enjoy the snow!

If you have a few days, we’d highly recommend sampling more than one of the resorts, as they all offer something a bit different. Take in the beautiful Scottish winter scenery for a fantastic snow break and road trip combined! Motorhomes have plenty of room so you won’t feel cramped alongside your skis. Thanks to a separate ‘garage’ area, you can store muddy or wet equipment safely away, or if you prefer, you can strap your boards and gear to the bike racks. You’ll also be warm and toasty thanks to our motorhomes’ duel fuel Thermostatic central heating system. Make yourself a hot cup of cocoa and you’re all set for a cosy evening!

Where to stay?

One of the best aspects of a motorhome holiday in Scotland is the freedom to go where and when you please, and that extends to winter breaks. In a motorhome you can camp in the car park overnight, have a leisurely breakfast and still beat the morning rush to the slopes! If you keep a close eye on the weather, you can also adapt your itinerary to find the best snow conditions, and move to another resort if it takes your fancy.

If you prefer staying at camp sites there are plenty of camp site and camping car touring sites for you to stay. The Campsite at Glencoe Mountain Resort offers spectacular scenery and 10 camper/caravan hook-up points, unlimited power, water, drying rooms, showers, and onsite café with a fully licensed bar. Linnhe Lochside Holidays near Fort William is ideally located for a day out at the Nevis Range, and with showers, dish-washing facilities and wi-fi, you’ll have access to all the facilities you need.

Scotland is a great destination for short winter breaks if you value convenience and accessibility. We’re also lucky to get some great snow! Facilities at ski centres have been improving over the last few years and skiing and snowboarding are more popular than ever. So give it a go this winter, head to the Scottish slopes and create your own adventure off piste!
